Sewing is therapeutic

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. I haven't been around happy news for myself so I turned myself into a sewing monster. 😅

I took up the challenge to sew a peplum (something I usually avoid thinking it won't suit my body type), I also took up the challenge to sew my own jeans with actual fly, I did Japanese style curtain for my kitchen and hobby room, I should do for all rooms actually because they both turn out pretty! 😍

Well, okay enough teasing.. Here are what I have made so far during my 17days long of HL.

It had been too long since I last sew my signature Fit it All Bag, so I did. I almost forgot for to construct them! I guess this shall be my Eid bag then eh.

Next...
I started off with doing my girl's jeans with an actual fly. It was successful and gave me some encouragement to try an adult's.

For her jeans, I used the Twist & Shout Trousers pattern from Made by Jack's Mum. I didn't exactly have enough denim, so it was actually made by several kinds and tones. If you stare and zoom enough, you'd notice it was a black front and blue for the back legs. 😅😅😅

Before I got into sewing this, I actually bought a Peplum top just to make sure I can carry the style. Well, my niece complimented me, so I decide to plunge into buying the pattern and sew one for myself. I used the "Be Adventurous" by Ellie & Mac Patterns. I even used the flounce sleeve option and ended up falling in love with it!

And yes, finally! I finally found the courage to try sew my own jeans! Searching for a jeans pattern that requires no stretch is a challenge in itself. I found two such patterns after a long long search, and decided to go for the Morgan Jeans by Closet Case Patterns because the pattern uses buttons instead of zipper fly. Heh! I love it! The fit, the steps, everything! I am still trying to make the waistband fit me better though.

And what is Ramadhan without some Eid preps. I finally did something worthy for the house this year. I made Japanese style curtains to separate different areas. I did two, one for the kitchen and one for the hobby room, if I find more time and energy, I might go ahead and do for the other two rooms as well. This one is self drafted, I simply use 2 pieces of 1yard fabric, piece them together selvage to selvage then divide into two, and hem all around. I sewn them such that they can be put up upside down as well, so I get 2 looks with 1 set of curtains, because why not?

And then I found myself making me a second pair of self-made jeans. Yeay! This time I made more mistakes but I learn.. Still finding trouble to fit the waistband on me but it doesn't fall off so that's okay. I think next time I will put elastic through the whole back of the waistband. I have a weird shape. So who says small sized people have it great? We don't, we struggle just as much as those curvy plus sized beautiful women out there.

I need to sew more to just get some things out of my head of worries. So to more sewing adventures, eh!

Until my next self-made something,
Jun

Peek-a-boo Pattern - Pat-a-cake Romper

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. After what seemed like forever, let me now get down to write on this way overdued pdf pattern that I bought!

The Pat-a-cake Romper by Peek-a-boo was bought like in September 2018!

This is the first one I made, in size 3m and I got a neighbour to put it on her 6mth old baby:

The Pat-a-cake Romper has multiple view options : standard neck or collared, pants length - shorts or long & sleeves - regular short or bubble.

I was quickly commissioned to make another for an older baby, so I made a size 12m.

Then I got keen to do a more girly version - a bubble with cuff sleeve and short length.

A friend quickly grab it off my hands although it is a size bigger, I made a 6m, her baby is going to be 3m - I think. Here she is!

Baby Y reminds me of Baby M with that hair! Oh I miss little babies in my house! Cries and wailing in the middle of the night inclusive! And yes, beside her are some of the gifts I gave to her, along with the rompers that I mailed over. I am so guilty of not visiting this girl!

Alright back to sewing the romper, the instructions were really clear and easy to follow, I like how the placket was done, it was really easy and there are almost no error of not catching the fold for this one. And oh! This pattern can be sewn using knits or woven - the beauty of it!

It took me approximately 3-6hrs from cut to finish with interruptions and distractions in between, but to keep myself sane, I do 1-2hrs (still with interruptions and distractions!) over 3days to finish two sets.

Definitely okay for a beginner to give this a try as long as you know how to read instructions and go for it!

Oh I made this with a little hack and combination with another pattern (another entry for the details)

Until the next one,
Jun

The Allium Dolman - as a tester (again!)

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. Following my entry of the Tulipa Dolman, here comes the women's version y'all!!!! It is such a wonderful experience testing for Mellissa. She is just so so kind to let me test again, despite the crappy photos. I should really do some justice and get a good camera and a friend who wont mind taking good photos of me or have someone else model it for me so I can take the pictures. Either way, Mellissa deserves better photos from me.

So yes!! A matching dolman for mommies!!! How awesome!!! It has all the great things the Tulipa has, the 3 lenghts, and 2 views and the sleeve options. The only difference is, this one comes with an inseam pockets (say what??!!). If you want an exact match, just make your own patch pocket. :)

For the adult version, please go with your high bust measument, you'll thank me later. As most women will have a smaller measurement for the high bust compared to the full bust, it helps to make this piece more fitted when you take your high bust measurement. As we all know, dolmans dont have an armsyce (armhole), so if you use your full bust measurement, chances are you may get a lot of room in the area.

I love love love the pattern! We went through 2 versions in this test, the first one ended up with most of us who did the tunic length having a long tunic, almost like a short dress. Still cute though! I love mine! So the 2nd version (which is the final version) has a shorter tunic and it will end right covering just your bum. You know how I love tunics!

Pls bear with my crappy photos, it is my blog, and this is the only place such crappy photos can appear as approved. Heh! You can surely look at the pictures other testers did, they all had awesome pictures! High quality and I am definitely jealous! I really should invest in a good camera and a good friend, man.. So ya.. Here comes my pictures...

And yeah, I know. I desperately need a better camera and at least a friend who could take better pictures for me. Oh, the sleeves on the pattern are not as long as mine, I just made mine longer because I just love super long sleeves. You'd get a standard long sleeves with her pattern.

Tulipa Dolman - a tester perspective!

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. I know and well aware that I haven't really post much about sewing lately. I havent had much chance or opportunity to test patterns and I miss it so much that when I saw Mellissa from Sew Like My Mom call for tester, I applied immediately!

Time was really not very much on my side lately, but I just had to jump on it. I knew her pattern is always so perfect and easy to tape together and instructions would be breeze, so I was confident to just give it a go despite being very busy.

I was given 3 days, I think.. And I made it before the deadline! Yeay!

I first knew of Sew Like My Mom when I was looking for free patterns to just try and to know designers and such. I stumbled upon the Sycamore Shorts. I love the instructions (and tips) and the awesome end product that comes along. I knew then, SLMM is definitely going to the list of awesome designers, and led me to purchase her Boxwood and Redwood Joggers. No regrets! It was one of the best decisions made and have since made more than 3 pairs each. See my blog abt it here.

So, when I saw a tester call from SLMM, I just had to! The only thing I lacked was a good worthy picture to go to the front page or anywhere. I guess I have to up my game soon if I want to be in the tester pool and stay there. Anyways, Mellissa is so nice.. I was assigned to make a 3T tunic with long sleeves and that I did.

She is one of the designers that I really dont mind taping A4s together, I mean if you know me, you know I am really lazy with taping patterns together, but hers I dont quite mind because I know it will match easy and perfectly. I taped it all up in less than an hour, with handphone and baby's distraction (if you need to know why it took THAT long).

It didnt take long for me to dive into which fabric to make it with. I bought cheap ones locally for $6/yard I dont see why I need to think about it. I had remnants lying around that is just enough, and used that as well.

The group was an awesome bunch, I get to go through the errors even before Mellissa opened an error thread, so instructions thereon was easy. It flows and is really easy to follow, and if you are an intermediate, you probably just scan thru and off you go to put them all together.

I took less than an hour to make a fit test and another hour to make another 2!

I love dolmans for many reasons, one, there is no armscye (armhole), which to me means comfort without compromising style. It comes with 3 lengths, a shirt length, tunic length and dress length. Perfect! One pattern, 3 styles.. we can go places! It has 2 views, now.. that multiplies to 6styles... View A is a non-gathered front and View B is gathered front, which means more space to swing the skirt around, also good for baby tummy! Yummy yummy tummy! And it comes in short (no sleeve piece needed) and long sleeve! How much more awesome can it get, right?

Now.. enjoy the pictures ppl!

What I love about this pattern? The curved front and back for the body is a nice feature. Actually I went for these because of the pockets, but time was not on my side to get that done, so there are now queuing at my machine to get the pockets sewn on.

I am all for it when an adult version comes out.. which may actually be sooner than I thought!

Oh! Here's the links if you would love to get the patterns and sew your own:

3 of 12 months of 2017

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. February went zoomed past me, and today is already the 4th week of March! Now let's catch up...

Beginning of March was pretty much just compiling all my orders for #sewbasicsg to get done once I am back from my holidays. Spend quite a bit of fabrics, so i can stay home to sew more than I get out to get fabrics or notions.

The 1st week was pretty much spent on packing and planning and getting money changed and confirmations of our trips..

The 2nd week, the long awaited family trip (which i had shared here) with my husband, my mom & my second niece.

I took a whole lot of photos to help #sewbasicsg last a long while before she needs more photos all over again. I took advantage of the outdoors, the green sceneries and whenever I have the chance to flash my camera and start clicking.

We came back drained. Thank god for insurance, we decided to make our first claim, just like that.

About insurance, I remember a lot of my younger adult which detest insurance. I used to feel like we are paying a whole lot for nothing because I was too young to treasure health and maybe just blessed to not get sick badly during that time frame. I took the simplest, the cheapest possible, and lapse a couple of times. My then insurance agent, Sean, was patient and keep telling me it will be beneficial later on, like 5-10 years down the road, and that I should really invest in a good plan. An advice that fell on deaf ears.

After he left the company, I never really bother to take a look at my policies. Last I met him was briefly after I got a job after a long year of unemployment since my retrenchment. I took one policy, the cheapest possible that covers hospital bills or something like that, with cash every yr after a certain number of years of investing. I was quite prompt on that one.

So ya, after he left, I felt more need for better coverage but never really bother that much UNTIL I got myself sick, badly. I was in the hospital wishing I have his number to call and ask. I didnt, and never went to find out.

I finally looked at some letters are realised he has left and that another agent was looking at my policies. Still nothing of real need. Right until Christmas last yr, I think. I decided to text her, and we met, and we became friends, I relook at my policies.

I regretted not listening to Sean back then. I wished I had a better policy that would cover my sickness which landed me in hospital for 8days. I wished I earn some payouts with it, but didnt. So I figured I need more coverage, since this sickness is for life. Ok, before you go all frantic, it is not cancer, it is not contagious, it is not something that stopped me from doing what I do everyday, but it does restrain me from some vigorous or hard work. It weakens by immune by a wee bit.

So, I took 2 more policies. And ended up with this bill of $200/mth, and some $400 smtg per annum, and the pre-existing one which is just $71.30/mth.

Not big amt means not a huge payout should I die or been diagnosed with another illness, but the least I can reassure myself that I am covered, and that my family will be somewhat a little or a lot eased with these insurance.

I am loyal to AIA for many reasons, the top reasons, as I always have to emphasize is how they agent took care of me. They never pushed me to swallow and take in the most expensive policy in their system, they never slash my meat and grill it to bloodless, they simply become my friend. In which I find comfort to consult them whenever in doubt. My agent get numerous repeated questions about my policies because I just dont remember. She attends to me like a friend would. Of course she doesnt have just me, so sometimes it takes awhile before she reverts, but she always does. I can never say enough thanks to her for taking care of my policies. Payments sometimes dont get through, and she NEVER judges me. She just simply reminds me when she gets notified of failed attempts to deduct the amount via giro.

I am glad for that. I remember another insurance company who would pass remarks like to not waste his time if I cant pay, yada yada.. Glad I got Sean to transfer that out and in with AIA. And have since been told to just pass my agent's number for other insurance company who couldn't take no for an answer to deal with.

I did just that the last time an agent call to advice me of some insurance. I simply pass it like "i have an agent, you may talk to her about your recommendations, and she will revert to me, thank you"

Usually I don't really get to pass her number, they will just say ok and hang up.

If you are keen to know your options, you may refer to this entry and get their number in that post.

So ya, that claim will go through, aint I glad I took up travel insurance for my trip!

3rd week, is just me doing laundry from the trips, for 3 days and counting, it is still not completed. Pfft. And also me completing orders that needs to get out to their owners by end this week.

Just as I typed this, I received news that my favourite Uncle S had passed... 20th March, another uncle gone to meet our Creator. Last I saw him was during my fathers passing, he came with his wife, I didn't see him a lot after that.. I had a little regret for not visiting him while I could. But regrets are useless when death intercepts. I should really try harder to make time for people while they are still here around me. I visited my cousin the next day.

He recalled and shared with us a beautiful memory of my Uncle S. He wanted us to just remember all the good things. And for the good things, I shall remember.

4th week... The last leg, which means I need to complete 2 hoodie orders, before I get going with 2 more... Alhamdulillah, I have been receiving orders. And here is what's new at #sewbasicsg

We delivered a Raglan Couple Set:

And we got around sewing something new too!

A dressier Mak & Me Collection, great for playdates, lunch out or hi-tea. Welcome, the Lyenq (Girls') and Eqa (Women's) Dress!

Go visit us at our FB Page or Instagram to see more of it. :)

We are also sewing some instocks, although I never got myself to start as much as I wanted to, partly because my immune is failing and not holding up right.

As much I wanted to slow down on reviewing, I had one that I must do! About A0 printing service, and how it is more beneficial when a fellow sewist provides such printing service than a printing company. Since I have had a good share of sending patterns to print at both. I will tell you just why it is so much smoother and easier to send it to a quilter instead of the printing shop.

In this last leg of March, I am also enjoying the LG Ultra HD 4K TV. The color, sound and clarity, oh my.. there is no going back! And we got it at a good one day sale! Paid in CASH! Awesome much!

And oh.. I bought cheap nice looking shoes too!

It may not be authentic, but I like this inspired New Balance.

And this "rejected" Converse.

It is just shoes! And with me riding, they will be very worn, so as long as it fits, and gives me comfort, I don't see why, and as long as seller is honest with it indicating "inspired" and telling us it is "rejected" due to minor defects like missed stitches, or discolor bits which my eyes couldnt catch unless I looked carefully looking for it.. Which I never did spot what the reject was. It fits, and that was all that mattered. So yeay to getting two shoes for just $60.50 incl reg mail!

But it is really authentic unless otherwise mentioned, and if you doubt their authenticity, you can always go to the shop.. noone is forcing you to buy, right? :)

These shoes are from here.

So much for slowing down on doing reviews eh, looks like I have a list building up to write now..

Nothing much planned for the last leg of March, so I shall just publish this. April is pretty much filled with weddings, I have 3 weddings to attend, I think.. More selfish sewing maybe? :)

Busy Sewing Bee,

Sewing McCalls 7380

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. About time I write a review!

A sewing review for pattern "McCalls 7380" a shirt dress for me!

I use a sz 6 top and sz 8 bottom. And I picked the most busy print, since it is my first try, I foresee myself making mistake, and a busy print will seal all those. heh..#sewingcheatcode101

Instructions was okay EXCEPT for the fly part. It was so confusing and hard to digest. There are reviews that says the same, so I am not alone. Thank god I know how it looks like and got it figured out myself somehow.

Took me 3hrs to trace and cut the pattern out, and piece it to the fabric and cut them up to prep.

And took me 6 hours to piece them together and sew to finish.

Here's my first. I made do without the sleeve cuff, and made it long sleeve instead of 3/4 sleeves and added pockets! All dresses should have pockets!

And here's the result:

See how the busy print hide all my ugly stitches and mistakes? haha! I like how my collar finishes on this one.

And I especially love love love my deep pockets!

And how I love it on me. And I felt crazy enough to make more of this!

So crazy I did it in my half zombified self and went ahead to make another piece, and made more mistakes. Bleargh. Haha.. But i rectified the mistakes to the best of whatever I can and here is it!

Sorry I didnt had enough mojo to iron the creases away or to put away that bag of remnants. But yes, the side front skirt pieces were sewn on the wrong ends to the middle front piece. So I amended it and turn it into a hi-lo shirt dress. Clever huh?

And oh I made contrasting pockets this time, because I just need to announce that my dress has pockets! Heh!

I really think I will end up sewing a lot of these dresses. And oh! I love the elastic touch at the back of this dress! I didnt take a picture of the back piece but I will add it on to this post once I do!

And here it is!

I just gotta relearn how to do the button fly right though, I need it to be neat enough before I attempt this dress on my AGF and Nani Iro!

So, I rate this pattern a 7/10. They need to write a better button fly instructions! So if you are attempting this or intend to buy this pattern, it will help a lot if you already know how to do a button fly, otherwise, you should reconsider, or have another method to do the button fly.

The rest of the instructions are okay and pretty straightforward. I love the dress, just not so much of the instructions. I love the outcome though! It felt so perfect!

Now! Fabric shopping time!!!

Until I sew more dresses and make it perfect,

The things people say when they know I sew

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. I know! I havent reviewed in a long time, I was suppose to do on for the Le Meridien but somehow all the photos I took of it disappeared from both my mobile and my husband's. We manage to only salvage a few but it wasnt a good picture of the whole hotel. Or I scrapped that, until I get another stay to take good pictures all over again.

And while I was sulking about the picture loss, it strike me to write this.

The things people say when they know I sew... Jeng jeng jeng...

Hah! Sewing isnt a new thing in my family. My mother sews, my aunty sews, my grandma can do hand stitching very well, my sister can hand sew neatly, so when I sew, it wasn't very extravaganza. Still, I get remarks.

Things my mom said when I first started. Do note that I am a messy girl who don't really care how it looks as long as I can use/wear it, when I first started. So here goes: "You? Sew? People will vomit at your stitches" "Why cant you stitch it right?" "Why arent you using matching thread for the fabric?" "Don't meddle with my tension settings!"

And often without even looking, she can tell I am messing her machine up and she will yell "ARE YOU TRYING TO DESTROY MY MACHINE?"

Haha.. Hey I was starting out and 90% of the time I was not doing any sewing right. So that explains.

I didnt do what she could do at that time. I never attempt to sew apparels. What I did was to sew bags and upcycle stuff. So she can't tell me the how and what nots.

Fast forward to today, when I can more or less sew my own apparels, and even take orders to sew pants and shorts for the children and adults alike, it is a different ball game.

There are various of groups that react very differently to the skill I have. I never knew sewing is a super power skill. LOL!

They would say "Oh you can sew? Can you make me this peplum dress with this flare sleeves?"

Usually I decline. On some weird days, I say okay.. but I am gonna charge it and it wont be cheap.

And they go like "oh you know.. at the supermart it cost like $19, so you should make it for $15"

I went like whaaaatttt?? you are kidding me, right? Material itself cost more than that, if it is cheap, chances are it will feel like garbage against your skin. Secondly, I don't just get fabric, unfold it and say albracadabra for it to become a dress. I need to draft a pattern, pin the pattern to the fabric, cut it, serge it and piece them all together. If you think it just take 1hr, I will tell you to go sew it yourself. What are you thinking??

And then there are people who go like "oh like that, I can send to you my pants and dresses that need alterations la!"

Hold it!! What makes you think sewing = alteration expert? It is a total different arena, baby! Oh no I dont do alterations, and oh no I won't! Even if it is JUST a length alteration, I dont. I wont. And if I do, it would be $15 thank you! So might as well trot yourself to the alteration shop near you who will charge $6-12 for a simple easy piece of alteration.

And then there are people who claim we are cheap to sew our own clothes. Oh yes baby, like a famous quote that always pops up in our community says, "Why buy it for $7 when you can make it yourself for $92 of craft supplies."

Perfect sense to me if you asked! Seriously, if it is soo cheap, everyone would be sewing!

Some like to put it simply like "Can sew me this, I can give you the sample, just sew it like that. Simple one!"

Oh so simple, then do it yourself.

Then they say "Oh i dont have a machine"

So I asked them to come by and use my machine, and I never heard from them since. Maybe they lost my number and address. Oh well.

Oh! Do read this : Top 50 Funny Sewing Quotes.

I could relate to a lot of it and definitely have a good laugh at it too!

Until I find the pictures so I can do a review!

Mini Wallet Pattern / Envelope Wallets for Eid

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. It's been so long since I write anything sewing related, so here's one!!

I sewn fabric envelopes for my nieces and nephews last year for Eid and inserted their cash in them instead of the normal green packet. So I thought I should give them an upgraded version which is better since I didn't have a proper pattern last year and all 5 was sort of odd-shaped.

So my search ended in The Sewing Loft blog here with their mini wallet pattern. I didn't bother cutting scrap though. I just found some good sized remnants that can make 1 or 2 wallets. I tweaked it a bit by adding a D ring strap at the side so they can hook it or put in their lanyard or something, or perhaps I can make a strap for them if they requests later on.

Here's the first one out:

Not bad eh.. I got hooked and do a couple more and added my labels.

Ended with a third piece that is different because the infusible interfacing refused to be fused, so I had to sew them in like so:
Doesnt look that bad eh?
And so I managed to complete 5 Envelope Wallets for my 5 nieces and nephews. Hope they like it!

Yeay! Completed!

It is easy to sew this pattern, and definitely a good way to finish remnants or scraps (if you choose to do it as suggested in the link).

And with the end of Ramadhan, I would just like to seek forgiveness for all my shortcomings, the wrong choices of words, and all my flaws. May you all be blessed this Eid with lots of forgiveness and closeness of all relationships.

Lots of love,
The sewing Bibik Jun

Sewing for the boys/men

Assalammu'alaikum family, friends, readers and followers of this blog. I know and well aware that I haven't really blogged about my sewing journey, at least not as much as I had wanted to. So today, let's just jump on it.

Sewing for the boys/men can be tedious and boring. And here's why!

Limited Fabric Choice

Oh tell me about it. The boys can at least have fun prints still, but men.. so so so limited choices.. Go for colours and they give this face. Go for fun and they wont wear it. Go for boring and they will say "oh I have that already"

Just lines...

And more lines....
Men!!!! Just what do you guys wear??
The very rare one that is fun but not too fun..

Tedious

For some reason, sewing a men's shirt is so tedious. These shirt patterns CANNOT go without pressing and ironing.

Kwik Sew 3484
And just for my own reference, I should revisit this blog to refresh how to sew the shirt right.
McCalls  6972
I have tried both, and I urge you sewist to please don't miss the pressing steps. It makes a huge difference.

And another reference for collar, see this blog.

Boring

I mean how many patterns are there for men? Seriously, there are always with shirt, t shirt, raglan shirt, and what? Singlet? *huffs* so boring.. Same thing, same fabric, same pressing game.

BUT it can teach you a few things.

Men's shirt look simple don't there, and expensive, even at sales, these shirts cost like what? $40 or something?

Well after sewing one I know why it is so expensive. And oh simple yes, but it is not too simple.

This is my first boy's shirt that I sew. Went horribly wrong with the wrong interfacing and the wrong step.

Tried again, by omitting the collar, still something is wrong..
Using McCalls 6972 Sz 3-4

Tried again, and well, with a bit of luck, it may turn out okay..
Using Kwik Sew 3484 Sx XL

Bottom line is.. DON'T GIVE UP. :) Keep trying, keep practicing! You'll get there, I will get there.

The toughest part for me when sewing these shirts is the front flap and collar, which tends to get on my edge. I will be making more of these whenever I need that extra challenge, definitely.

It is fun, when you do it once in awhile, but I do find it really tedious to be constantly being on point with the serge, sew, press, sew, press and to repeat that process for every part. It does drives me insane, but seeing the end result so pretty (probably because of the constant pressing), it does give me that satisfaction smile. And to top it up, the husband is impressed.

It fits! Yeay!

IF you do have fun prints for the men, do hola me! I sooo need some to practice sewing these!

The sewist who is having fun,
Jun
